History of the TVA

CLEARANCE L5ERAS 06STATUS ONGOING

The orientation film tells one story about where the TVA came from. The truth took two seasons to come out. This file puts everything known in order, from the war that started it to the crisis the TVA is facing now.

SPOILER WARNING

This archive file covers Loki seasons 1 and 2, Deadpool & Wolverine and later appearances in full. Expect spoilers.

01The Multiversal War

In the 31st century, a scientist discovered other universes and made contact with his own variants. At first they shared knowledge. Then some of them chose conquest, and the result was a war between universes.

That scientist became He Who Remains. He ended the war using Alioth, a creature that devours everything, isolated a single timeline from all the others, and built the TVA to keep it that way.

OFFICIAL VERSION

The orientation film gives a different version: the Time-Keepers ended the war and created the Sacred Timeline and the TVA. That was the cover story.

02Building the Authority

The Sacred Timeline — one timeline, protected from branching by pruning variants and resetting branches.
The Time-Keepers — three figureheads to give the TVA a face. They were androids.
The staff — variants taken from across time with their memories wiped. Ravonna Renslayer once commanded He Who Remains' army before her memory was erased.
The Temporal Loom — the machine at the heart of the TVA that turns raw time into the timeline. Built for one timeline only, and secretly a fail-safe.
Repairs & Advancement — Ouroboros "O.B." says he has run it alone for about 400 years, and wrote the TVA Handbook.

03The Variant Hunt (Loki season 1)

2012 — Loki escapes New York with the Tesseract and is arrested by the TVA in the Gobi Desert.
The hunt — Agent Mobius recruits him to catch a variant killing Minutemen and stealing reset charges: Sylvie, another Loki.
The revelations — TVA staff are variants; the Time-Keepers are androids; pruning sends people to the Void.
The Citadel — Loki and Sylvie reach the Citadel at the End of Time. He Who Remains offers them the TVA. Sylvie kills him instead.
Branching — With He Who Remains gone, the timeline begins to branch uncontrollably. A statue of He Who Remains now stands in the TVA.

04The Loom Crisis (Loki season 2)

Command — Renslayer is missing. Judge Gamble and General Dox take charge; Gamble orders an end to pruning once staff learn they are variants.
Dox's purge — Dox goes rogue and destroys branches with reset charges and modified TemPads. She is captured, and later killed by Miss Minutes.
The coup — Renslayer and Miss Minutes try to install Victor Timely, a variant of He Who Remains, as leader. Renslayer is pruned into the Void.
Collapse — The Temporal Loom cannot handle infinite branches. It explodes, and TVA headquarters spaghettifies.
The keeper — Loki destroys the Loom and holds the dying branches together himself, enthroned at the End of Time.

05The New TVA

Mission — no more single Sacred Timeline. The TVA accepts the branches and watches for variants of He Who Remains instead.
Leadership — Hunter B-15 is among the new leaders. Mobius retires.
Staff — Miss Minutes is reactivated by O.B. and appears friendly. O.B. publishes a new Handbook, co-written with Timely.
Earth-10005 — a rogue agent, Mr. Paradox, tries to speed up the end of the Deadpool and Wolverine universe with a Time Ripper. B-15 arrests him.

06The Multiverse Crisis

In the scenes added to the 2026 Avengers: Endgame re-release (reported), Mobius, Casey, O.B. and Miss Minutes watch two universes collide in an incursion. O.B. warns that the multiverse is collapsing, and a sign names Loki the TVA's "Employee of all time". Loki is confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday (December 2026).
