FILE 00 // ORIENTATION

Welcome to the TVA

CLEARANCE L1AUDIENCE NEW RECRUITSSECTIONS 06

You are reading this because you have been issued a TemPad. Congratulations. This file covers what every recruit must know before a first shift: what the Time Variance Authority does, what the Sacred Timeline is, and why one wrong turn on one ordinary Tuesday can become everybody's problem.

CLASSIFIED MATERIAL

Some lines in this handbook are classified. Select a black bar to declassify it. Declassified material contains spoilers for Loki seasons 1 and 2.

01The Authority

The Time Variance Authority is the bureaucracy charged with keeping the Sacred Timeline in order. Its headquarters sit outside the normal flow of time, which is why wristwatches are useless here and why nobody can tell you how long they have worked a shift.

Officially the TVA serves the Time-Keepers, three guardians said to have ended a multiversal war and brought order to time. The Time-Keepers were animatronic figureheads. The TVA was built by He Who Remains, a variant living at the End of Time.

Most agents, analysts and clerks do not remember a life before the TVA. They were variants themselves, recruited after their memories were wiped.

02The Sacred Timeline

The Sacred Timeline is the single approved order of events. Every being on it has a path, and almost everyone follows that path without ever knowing it exists.

When someone steps off the path, reality starts to split. The TVA's job is to notice the split, go there, and put things back the way they were supposed to be.

03Variants & Nexus Events

A variant is anyone who strays from their set path. A nexus event is the moment of deviation, the choice or accident big enough to create a branch timeline.

A branch left alone keeps growing and splitting. When branching passes the redline, it can no longer be contained. According to TVA history, unchecked branching once ended in a multiversal war.

04How the TVA Responds

  1. Detect — Analysis & Monitoring flags the branch and rates its severity from 1 to 10.
  2. Deploy — A Minutemen squad goes through a Time Door to the point of origin.
  3. Apprehend — The variant is neutralised, restrained and taken back to headquarters.
  4. Reset — A reset charge is deployed and the branch is pruned back into the Sacred Timeline.
  5. Try — The variant stands before a judge. See File 05: Variants & Trials.

05Equipment You Will Meet

  • TemPad — this device. It tracks timelines, opens Time Doors and keeps your case logs.
  • Time Door — the glowing rectangular doorway a TemPad opens to any point in time.
  • Reset charge — a device that erases a branch and restores the Sacred Timeline.
  • Time stick — the Minutemen's baton; its prune setting erases a variant or object from the timeline.
  • Time collar — fitted to detained variants so they cannot run.

Full specifications are in File 07: Artifacts.
